#113 Japanese oakwood Weissenborn

#113, Weissenborn guitar, made from Japanese white oak and curly walnut. Front view.

Switzerland, February 2023

The search for a suitable piece of oakwood for a new Weissenborn ended when I came across an old piece of Japanese oakwood with a very fine grain. The annual rings are as close together as within a piece of spruce.

The topwood is strong, but also flexible. By request, the guitar should be suitable to use with lower tunings around C. The instrument is light built (it weights only 1,7 kilo) with a strong top, resulting in a wide pallet of sounds. Even touching the wood around the bridge with the slide bar changes the sound.

A special request was to engrave a Japanese text in the wood. The text is found by my (then) 9 year old son, and the engraving is his actual handwriting. The text translates roughly as 'wood and sound makes music'.
