Electric guitar construction

Wood

For the construction of electric guitars, many different woods are suitable. Guitars made by Fern's are always recognizable by the special pieces of wood that are used. We prefer to do a natural or slightly stained finish. To get the right tone woods for your instrument we have contact with many wood suppliers in The Netherlands, Germany, Spain USA and other places. In the workshop we stock many beautiful and special pieces of wood as inspiration for your instrument. We can demonstrate the differences in tone looks and feel.

Neck

All necks are made from a blank piece of wood in the workshop. We don't use factory necks from All Parts, Warmoth and others. Because the necks are made in the workshop, we can adjust it perfectly to your wishes. Necks can be made with a different thickness, widths, different fretboard radius, and even an alternative scale lenght. If possible, we ask you to visit the workshop while shaping your neck. Feeling with your hands tells you more than looking at a picture. To be sure to get a perfectly adjustable neck, we fit it with a two way adjustable truss rod.

Pickups

Guitars can be fitted with different types of pickups. Fern's Guitars like to use the pickups of Jason Lollar and EMG.
Jason Lollar makes the best new vintage sounding pickups. Besides, he is a very flexible builder, and very capable of constructing a completely custom made pickup. If you look for an old sound in a new pickup, get the Lollars.
EMG is very well known for their low noise active pickup systems. From rock to metal styles EMG can be very helpfull in your instrument. Besides, EMG recently launched their X series to supply an EMG pick that keeps most dynamics fom a passive pickup.

Bridges and tremolo systems

The bridge on a guitar effects the way you play, and effects your sound. And it should look good! Fern's Guitars works with bridges and tremolo bridges from Schaller, Gotoh, Hipshot and Kahler. We are happy to explain all differences between the bridges, and how they affect your instrument.

Tuners

All guitars in the Classic series are fitted with first class tuners from Schaller. You can choose between chrome, black and gold color.

Topnut

For our topnuts, we use blanks of bone, brass or graphtec.

Electronics

The electronics are build around high quality components. Potmeters are used from the Bourns brand. Bourns produces a serie of high quality and very long life sratch free potmeters specially designed for electric guitars.

Finish

Guitars can be finished with oil or laquer.
Guitars wich are finished with oil have a warm natural feel. The wood touches directly to your hands. Specially necks made from darker colored woods can be very comfortable to play when finished with oil. Small damages in the wood can be very easy to repair. Scratches are simply sanded away and covered with some fresh oil. An oil finish is also less expensive.
Laquer finishes are giving that endless depth in some woods. A triple 'A' class tigerstripe in maple with a high gloss laquer finish gives the most impact. We work with a very special PU laquer that gives the best gloss and a very durable protection. Laquer finish is done by brush. After enough layers of laquer the guitar is sanded and polished to shine. The result is a rather thin coat of laquer, just enough to protect, but not so much to completely choke the wood. We can stain the wood before putting a laquer finish.

Hiscox case

A new build guitar needs a good protection. All Fern's electric guitars are fitted with a strong case from Hiscox.
